Anybody out there ever been to a quilting retreat? If so, I may want to ask you some questions for an upcoming Quilter's Home article I am writing. If you have funny stories, went and loved it, went and hated it, or know of an interesting retreat, I'd really like to hear from you. Leave me a comment with a way for me to get back to you or email me directly at harperland (at) mac dot com.
Thanks!
I've been to several and love retreating. You never know how wild, weird, and funny your fellow quilters are until you're sewing with them at 2:00 in the morning.
ReplyDeleteI have lots of retreats under my belt, both from the perspective of a quilter and as a quilt shop owner. I'll be glad to help if I can, email me.
ReplyDeleteI've been to a couple of retreats, and had some funny moments at the most recent one. It involves salmon, the cook Roberto (you have to roll the R in a sexy way when you say it) and some very bawdy humor.
ReplyDeleteBeen to many.
ReplyDeleteTaught at a few.
Wine always makes them better.
Glad to help.
I have attending many quilting retreats....all with our own guild and only upwards of 12-14 gals. I LOVE them! Sewing all day in pjs, with friends, eating GREAT food, staying up til the wee hours of the morning, sleeping in or getting up to start again bright and early. We've had planned activities (a mystery quilt; exercise!!! :o(; games like Bingo, Scavenger Hunts, etc) and we've also done ones where we've only had draws for prizes provided by our guild. Excellent times ALWAYS!!!
ReplyDeleteI've only been to one, which I planned. It was just my sisters and I (there are 5 of us!) in a cabin for the weekend. Loved it, and we plan to do it every year from now on.
ReplyDeleteI would be glad to help in any way I can: cpearson7@comcast.net
I have been to many retreats. Some with my guild, some with a nearby Quilt shop and some with friends at a timeshare condo we own. I love them all...
ReplyDeleteI've been to many retreats and they have always been a blast!! I'd be happy to answer questions... sunflower78@att.net
ReplyDeleteI've been going to a 'retreat' for the last 10 years over President's weekend. There's usually 85-100 women that attend and we take over every available condo at the Chautauqua Institute in Chautauqua, NY. I've shared the condo all these years with the same group of 6 women. We have more laughs, quilt for 18-20 hours each of the 4 days, drink adult beverages, visit other quilters, exchange 'Quiltmas" gifts and just have a raucous good time. I'm back from it now just over a week, still recovering the lost sleep and missing it greatly.
ReplyDeleteI hated the retreat that I went on. The rest of the attendees were very cliquey.
ReplyDeleteLove....love love quilt retreats any place to go to get material...wine and whiney women together oh crap the massage worked well to.......Im going to email you....thanks....lanilaskowski@sbcglobal.net
ReplyDeleteMy friendship group, Material Girls, go on retreats several times a year to my little beach house. Recently though, as our group has gotten bigger, we found a great place at a trailer park in a beach town that we go to. All I can say is there is plenty of food, sewing and fun and we always say what happens at retreat, stays at the retreat.
ReplyDeleteLOVE retreats! I got to 3 or 4 a year - all different. Our guild does a retreat in the nearby mountains each fall - no shops, but sewing ALL day for 4 days. Free classes, great food, etc. Another is put on by the Utah State Guild - LOTS of classes - taught by local and national teachers. Shops galore. Stay at a hotel with friends, etc. My bee holds 2 a year - 10-5 p.m. for 3 days in a row at someone's home. (My hubby likes this one the best, since I'm not gone over night.) Lots of giggles, laughs and FUN!!!
ReplyDeleteMy bee has been having retreats for more than 10 years. We started with a small beach house and 8 quilters. Our semi-annual retreats now fill a lodge at a camp nearby with 30 quilters. We have a great time!
ReplyDeleteI have been on LOTS of retreats all over Texas. With as few as 6 people and as many as 35. My two friends and I even did a program on retreating at the Waco, TX, quilt guild. I'll be glad to help.

ReplyDeleteI have been to many retreats but the one that stands out in my mind is where the owner/hostess greeted us and proceeded to tell us that she hadn't made a profit in 10 years and that we had to keep our showers to 5 minutes and not to let the water run while brushing our teeth. Amazing we didn't get rationed on our toilet tissue. We had a teacher come out from a local quilt shop and the owner pondered on how much she should charge her for being there!
ReplyDeleteI go to just one retreat a year, in the Fall, when the leaves are turning. The retreats are great fun, I get to meet a lot of really great gals, get alot of quilting done, and eat great food. The funnest times are at the Gift Swap where everyone brings a wrapped gift (should be quilt related) and we all try to steal from one another. By the way, did you notice that retreat has the word "treat" inside???? That should tell you something!
