One of the reasons I've been pursuing machine quilting is that I really wanted to quilt the insides of the solid squares with a flower that echoed the flower motif in the black and white fabric. Today I got out a scrap piece of that fabric and first traced one of the flowers, then drew one freehand.
I suppose it would have been smart to keep drawing it over and over until I wanted to stab myself in the head, because that usually seems to be the smart thing to do, but I went ahead and tried it out on one of my practice quilts sandwiches.
Not bad for a first attempt, huh? I can't believe I'm saying that - I usually think that everything I do is so ugly it needs to be quarantined, but I'm actually quite happy with this. Obviously, it needs some work, but if I put that on my quilt, I wouldn't feel bad about it at all.
Now that's an odd feeling.
Great job ... looking forward to your next project.
ReplyDeleteI never practice by drawing (unless I am at work avoiding the work I'm being paid to do). I go right to the machine and practice on crap fabrics.
ReplyDeleteLooking good and love your blog
ReplyDeleteWow - nicely done! Jealous!
ReplyDeleteIf you come across any other designs that you feel may be too tricky to do free hand, you can always mark your quilt with the design and then 'trace' with your stitches.
Woohoo!!! Look at you go .... you're really good at those!! Yay for you :o).
ReplyDeleteHugs,
Joy:o)
You mentioned that it needed work? I thought it was great. Love your blog from a lurker
ReplyDeleteI think it looks great! I tried a flower once, and was sorely dissappointed. I would have been thrilled if it had come out as good as yours does.
ReplyDeleteI LOVE that quilt pattern! Is it an original? If not, would you tell us, please, what pattern it is? THANKS!

Hi, Michele
ReplyDeleteThe pattern is called Labyrinth and it was included with some fabric I bought on eBay. It must have been a free pattern that was distributed by RJR fabrics, but it isn;t on their website or anywhere else I can find. Maybe I'll try to write it out and post it for you.
Good Job! You've come a long way in a short amount of time! Get a large white board and keep it next to couch -- practice when you're parked in front of the tv. Practicing really does make a difference. It trains your brain. 15 minutes makes all the difference -- it becomes automatic and you don't have to stop and think "where do I go now".
ReplyDeleteThanks for the info, Megan. I've just googled "Labyrinth pattern RJR" and came up with several sites (a couple of which are yours!) but none of them with the pattern. I did email RJR and a quilt shop that has the pattern included with a kit, so we shall see. (I'd go search on ebay, but can't get there on my work computer.) I really would like the pattern. I love the colors and fabs you've used in your quilt - it really pops! And if you quilt it with that flower pattern - YUM! Michele
ReplyDeleteLady, that's fricking phenomenal! Well done. I've only just discovered your blog recently, and I'm drinking it in - nice to find someone else out there who isn't afraid to say what's on her mind, although you're quite a bit better-spoken than I am. Keep up the fabulous work.
ReplyDeleteHey, your flower looks great! I'm impressed. It will be really nice on your quilt!
